I have recently been asked a few questions by clients and thought that I would share a few of my thoughts here. The topic mainly being in regards to children’s shoots. I know there are quite a few who would rather not venture down this avenue as it can be quite time-consuming – and that’s true. But it is also fun.
Do you use backdrops and flash?
No.The majority of children’s shoots that I do are outside , the exceptions beings new borns and infants. I personally prefer natural light and like to work with this as much as possible. This remains the same if i have to shoot in doors. I will work where there is the most natural light. I don’t carry back drops for newborns or baby’s, but I may use throws and baskets etc. I class myself as a lifestyle photographer, and your home and your surroundings work just fine for me.
What clothes are best for them to wear?
Now, as much as I would love to be, I am no fashionista. My 5-year-old niece is more stylish than me! But, what I do know works on camera is colour – especially for children. I would suggest pops of colour in their outfit. Bright shoes, dress, trousers, accessories.. some injection of colour I think works best. Also, think ahead for the location and weather. This time of year is perfect for Muddy fields and Wellington’s. Imagine being 5 and having to walk past a huge puddle of mud because of not having the right type of footwear. Not happy.
What is your shooting style?
Hopefully by the time my clients have decided that they want to book me for their shoot, they have seen either my website, blog or if a recommendation pictures from a friends shoot. My style is relaxed and fun – and I hope this come across in the pictures. I like to give your child a chance to know me without having a camera in front of them straightaway . So, I will talk to them for a while and get them used to me. In quite a few shoots we will let the parents linger behind, so they can get passed the shyness and concentrate on the fun. Because,at the very heart of it, it has to be fun. Children will let you know when it is not and when they have had enough. My aim is to capture your child being them.Real smiles, muddy knees, missing teeth.Every stage is beautiful!
