I remember thinking that if I could get myself a brochure together in print then the bookings would come flying in. Of course they would, I was investing in print and they looked professional. Sadly I was a little wrong. After selling my car and investing the money from the sale into paper goods of brochures and contracts, the bookings didn’t come flying in. But, I did feel that when clients contacted me, I now had something professional to present. For me, I would advise anyone who is thinking of investing a lot into paper goods early, to slow down and invest small and in manageable sizes.
When I first ordered my paper goods, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I had seen something I liked and wanted my business to have the same. But,what I failed to see that was in 6 months time, after the more shoots I did, my portfolio was growing and my style was developing. And then when I went full frame – my eyes were seeing differently again. So, the money that I had invested in the brochures was not really going to get me my clients, because I didn’t want to use them, I wanted my fresh & new images. I could have invested the money for the brochures (even though the feel and look was pretty) into SEO campaigns or cards & equipment.
I also invested money into contracts – this was a good move. The only bad move was the volume I ordered. Like I said I was new. I invested in enough contracts to literally last me about 6 years+, which in looking back was a hasty move 😉 I should have paid higher per unit for less. Your style changes, and especially with contracts as you go along there are elements that need to be added and changed. So, I have now seen a little bit of sense. With the change of the business name I needed to update my contracts too. So, this time I have created them myself. Quite simple but pretty.
I like sending pretty things out to clients. And nothing leaves my office without a hand written note. I include a welcome letter, contract and details, return stamped addressed envelope and a recap of the collection.
I imagine I will add more things to them as time goes on. But I do quite like them 😉
And your contracts are a lovely thing to receive in the post! Xx
Thanks Chloe! xx
