Well it feels like summer is finally here with all this amazing sunshine we have been having, and long make it continue. Today I have something a bit different for you, I have a guest blogger – Jo Jessop. I met Jo at a launch party for a new bar/restaurant in Leeds a few weeks ago and we instantly hit it off. Over a  variety of cocktails, canapés and champagne we talked about what we did, and I asked  Jo if she would write as a guest blogger some time – to which she agreed! So, let me introduce you to Jo Jessop, PR and communications extraordinaire!

When I met Natasha recently at the launch of Angelica and Crafthouse in the new Trinity Leeds – we just got on! You know that feeling, when you just ‘click’ with someone!

After talking about life; what we do, who we know, where we’ve been… Natasha asked if I would be willing to guest blog for Margaurita Photography.

After many a canapé, cocktail and champagne, Natasha and I chatted whilst she ‘made notes’ of what this guest blog could be about – however, the morning after, we soon realised that we had only made note of the guest blog title – ‘What’s your Story?’ So here goes… my guest blog entitled – ‘What’s your Story?’

Firstly, to introduce myself, I am Jo Jessop and for nearly 10 years I have worked in the PR and Communications industry, often immersed in the world of media and news. As a result, every day I find myself asking ‘so…what’s your story?’ or stating ‘that’s the one… that would make a great story!’

But what is it? What is the hidden gem? What makes a good story? Obviously, as a PR professional, I know what makes a newsworthy story – looking out for whether it is; timely, interesting, important, relevant, prominent…

But in this guest blog, I want to concentrate on how photography can communicate a story, having the power to tell the most ambiguous, intriguing and enchanting stories ever told.

In PR the story has more chance of media/news coverage when it is accompanied with a quality image. In 1911, a newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane was discussing journalism and publicity and quoted “Use a picture. It’s worth a thousand words.” To this day many people still say this, it may have become a cliché, but it is so true! Don’t get me wrong, I love words and language, but imagery magically can capture the story in just one single image.

When I look through Natasha’s photography, I am enchanted by the love stories that are evident, I find myself looking into the eyes of those captured not only by the camera, but also by cupid.

I love people. I can sit and watch all day, thinking, ‘I wonder what they are doing, where they are going, what they are facing, what they are thinking?’… People just intrigue me.

When we look at photographs it appeals to our emotion, evoking responses from amusement, inquisitiveness to sadness. When viewing photographs of people, we all consciously and subconsciously make up our own mind about what the photograph has captured and what the story might be.

For me an image is a story in its own right and what I see and think will be completely different to what you may see and think!

So, keep clicking and capturing those stories – remembering, they speak more than a thousand words.

Thank you Jo – for such a fabulous post. If you would like to see more of Jo’s work, follow her on twitter here and catch up on all her latest!!
